Welcome to the Middle Ages !
Reawaken the knight within you or the princess that you’ve always dreamed of… Enjoy an unforgettable family experience ! Equipped with a puzzle (children) and a quiz (adults), discover the medieval garden and get to know all the farmyard animals before exploring the castle. From the top of the ramparts, admire our collection of military equipment and our castle motte (site) with its fort dating from the year 1,000. Activities for the whole family: over 40 games for children and adults alike can be enjoyed over the 15 hectares of the castle grounds. Finally, the barefoot trail, the legend of the fairy Mélusine and her wishing tree. The orienteering race, the labyrinth and the musical forest will lead you to the discovery of large protected naturel areas.

Discover the fortified castle of Saint Jean d'Angle in Charente Maritime
We invite you to discover all the attractions at the fortified castle of Saint Jean d'Angle :
• The castle motte [ More details ] The visible circular traces on the castle site were excavated in 2015. The report of the geophysical excavations undertaken pointed to the likely presence of earth or wooden structures. Possibly a castle motte (an early castle site from the 10th century!). Our reconstruction of a castle motte on the site finally took shape. Come and discover the only site comprising a fully renovated castle dating from the 12th century and its motte, overlooked by a small wooden fort typical of castles in the 10th century.
• Aliénor Rose Garden [ More details ] From the 6th century onwards, convents and monasteries grew roses. In the 8th century, Charlemagne’s Capitulare de villus* listed roses as one of the plants to be cultivated. * A document providing guidelines for the management of Charlemagne’s estates. Take time to stroll in the castle’s rose garden. The roses delicate colours and subtle scents are a feast for the senses.
• The siege machine [ More details ] The castle acquired a trebuchet* in working order from Renaud Beffeyte, an artisan and medieval enthusiast, as well as a renowned specialist of civil and military machines from this era. The trebuchet firing demonstration is a highlight of any visit to the castle. The military camp set up around the castle allows you to discover siege machines, a mantelet (a large shield or portable shelter used for protection in medieval warfare) and a battering ram (designed to pound down the gate on a besieged castle). * A trebuchet is a type of catapult, a common and powerful type of siege engine which uses a swinging arm to throw a projectile. It was used in wars and sieges in the Middle Ages.
• A medieval-style garden [ More details ] Situé dans la basse-cour, au pied du château et composé de 12 carrés ce jardin reprend les codes du moyen-âge et vous permettra de découvrir l’Hortus (potager) et l’Herbularium (pharmacie du moyen-âge avec ses plantes médicinales). Vous y découvrirez les vertus des plantes couramment utilisées au moyen âge.
• A visit for everyone [ More details ] Young knights and princesses can test their bravery on an adventure made up of 20 puzzles ! A certificate from the fairy Mélusine will reward your valour and problem-solving skills. For adults, come and discover the Middle Ages through our quiz. Don't forget your pen !
• A sport tour [ More details ] Want to get some exercices ? For you: - An archery: For a moment, become an archer and challenge yourself in our archery. - A labyrinth: Outwit the trickster goblins in their magical labyrinth. Can you find your way back? (JULY-AUGUST ONLY) An orienteering race: And for the more athletic, try the orienteering race. Alone or in a team, find all the markers in a minimum of time (on request at the reception).
• A visit in costume [ More details ] We would like to inform you that, in accordance with the sanitary rules imposed, we are not able to put the costumes at your disposal. We count on your understanding to apologize for this inconvenience beyond our control !
• The castle farmyard [ More details ] Discover the farmyard as it would have been in medieval times: see the hens, ducks, goats, sheeps, horses … Come and discover or re-discover some forgotten breeds !
• Medieval games for the whole family [ More details ] Share an exciting experience with your family testing your skill and agility with more than 40 medieval games available over the 15 hectares of the castle grounds.
• The magic of Mélusine the fairy [ More details ] Guillaume de Lusignan is believed to the founder of this fortified castle. He belonged to one of the most powerful families of the Poitou region who owed their reputation and wealth to a fairy protector: Mélusine. Discover the story of the fairy Melusine and challenge her sons through 10 games to place your wishes in the magic tree.
• The musical forest [ More details ] The fairy Melusine invites you to live a musical experience. Elves, fairies and other fantastic creatures await you for a magical concert.
• Barefoot trail [ More details ] Come and rediscover a forgotten pleasure: walking barefoot in nature. A surprising and delicious experience for the senses ! |
